Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People using these drugs should be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a return to starting mass within about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists point out that people who lose weight through dieting typically experience a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Doctors propose the way of the drugs explains the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Users who have discontinued the medication report a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and you become starving," described a patient.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural support.
